A new teaching scheme has been launched by Elland Silver Band.

Brass Kidz has been created in partnership with Longroyde Junior School, Rastrick.

The scheme will enable children in Year 3 and Year 4 to have the opportunity to learn to play a brass instrument.

Children are taught in groups during school time by the youth band’s musical director, Samantha Harrison.

They then get together after school to form the Longroyde Brass Kidz ensemble.

Elland Silver Band has lent instruments and music to the school.

Head teacher at Longroyde Robert Fox said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for our children to get involved with.

“It is an important part of our community cohesion work and we hope to encourage our young people to take up a skill for life.”

Band secretary Kathleen Harrison said: “For us to continue with our success, we want to reach out into the community and offer as many young people as possible the opportunity to learn an instrument.

“Through our encouragement and training we look forward to seeing some of these children become members of our training band.”

Elland Silver Band are now looking to apply for further funding to enable them to offer children in other local schools the opportunity.

Last year, the band won the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service last year for its work with young people and has won several national titles.
