£4m jobs fund puts priorities in question

Have your say

On the day that the Leader of Calderdale Council, Councillor Janet Battye, is celebrating improvements to a playground in Hebden Bridge (which is in Councillor Battye’s Calder ward coincidentally enough), the Leader of Kirklees Council will be celebrating the news that a Huddersfield manufacturing firm has received £4.8m from the Government’s Regional Growth Fund.

The firm in question, David Brown Gear Systems, manufactures gear systems such as those used for submarines and trains and the funding will help create around 80 new jobs and enable the company to expand into the low carbon and renewable energy market.

Political leadership is vital at all times, but especially now, and one cannot help but question Councillor Battye’s priorities.
