As a relatively new councillor my experience of the recent budget setting meeting was both interesting and ultimately confusing. The Conservative group presented three amendments to the budget – on the day of the meeting, so giving other councillors no time to assess their contribution to the budget process and which appeared to affect less than 1 per cent of the £179m budget. Am I being naive or is this last-minute posturing by the Conservatives the unacceptable face of local politics?
