Cherished land will be vandalised

We write in response to the report (Halifax Courier August 30) that it is intended to build no fewer than 6,800 new homes in Calderdale’s beautiful and cherished Green Belt.

We believe this proposal (which, according to the prestigious Campaign for the Preservation of Rural England, also entails almost 1/3 of all new buildings in England to be sited in Yorkshire) is both unacceptable and manifestly unnecessary given the large number of ‘House for Sale’ notices and brownfield sites lying vacant throughout Calderdale.
Councillor David Sutherland, who supports this act of vandalism - while wisely failing to name the Council he represents - should be ashamed of himself, and we trust that Calderdale councillors will unanimously reject his damaging plans without radical revision.
