Act now before a tragic accident takes place! I would like to warn readers about a street that has become an accident blackspot over the last few years.
The street known as Bottoms links Siddal to Salterhebble. It has a steep gradient and a slippy cobbled surface. At the bottom of this street is Hebble Brook. Over the last few winters a series of cars have slid down the hill, destroying the inadequate wooden barriers and demolishing the stone wall overlooking the river. The next car to slide down this hill will have no protection from plunging 10 feet into the river itself. As readers can imagine the consequences of this could be tragic. I urge whoever is responsible to sort this wall out as soon as possible rather than wait for next winter and yet another another accident to take place. As well as a new reinforced wall, there needs to be a raised concrete curb before it to stop vehicles as they slide. Also, the salt bin at the top of Bottoms needs to be filled regularly by the council and warning signs put in place when the surface is treacherous. Better still, the poorly maintained cobbles should really be covered to give better grip. And motorists should think twice about driving down this hill in icy conditions.
