I read in the Hebden Bridge Times that Labour Councillors are supporting the Post Office’s bid to win the contract with the DVLA, which they have recently tendered for.
I’m glad local Labour Councillors are now trying to support Post Offices. It was a great travesty that under the last Labour government there were more Post Office closures than under the Tory governments of Thatcher and Major.
However whilst we all hope the Post Office wins this contract, there is little the Council can do to influence a tendering process governed by European law. The next stage of the campaign to support the tender was a motion to Calderdale Council. This motion was well-meaning, but as the Council can’t influence the tendering decision it was ultimately meaningless.
Thankfully the motion was amended and improved by Coun Janet Battye, and now as a result a meaningful discussion will take place with the Post Office to see what they can to do to help deliver Council services. This should hopefully build on the coalition’s commitment to make Post Offices the ‘front office of government’ and help give our Post Offices a secure future at the heart of our community.
