Issues must be tackled

Thank you so much for featuring ’Pride In Elland’ in The Courier.

The town deserves everyone’s support, which is why I’m standing in the council elections in May 2012.

It is a great place in which to live, work and socialise. I have lovely memories of taking my children to the swimming baths, Dobson’s sweet shop and Kai’s take away for a treat.

Andy Thornton’s, Elland Brewery and Bertie’s are just three examples of grand businesses - and then there are the Rex Cinema, Golf Club and Overgate Hospice. There are so many great examples of distinction and pride, it’s so difficult to name just a few!

But things could be better. I’ve been talking to local residents recently and found they are concerned about:

l Anti social behaviour (Litter, dog fouling, drink and drug abuse)

l Traffic (Aspects of calming schemes, rat runs and speed limits)

l The condition of council buildings (libraries, swimming pool and those left disused)

We need to tackle these important issues in Elland and I want to work with local residents, shops, businesses and partnerships to make a difference.

We can all do something to help.

I would welcome the opportunity to discuss these points further.

Very best wishes and thanks again.

Mike Payne
