The current debate about the state of British High Streets is very apposite, especially at this time of financial distress.
In this respect, although Halifax has quite a few empty shops, it doesn’t seem as bad as some places appear to be. Walking around Halifax it is clear we still have a good variety of local shops and businesses, which can only be good for this wonderful town of ours. A suggestion made recently at the Halifax and Huddersfield Speakers Club to improve Halifax at little cost might be to have a summer-long Flower Festival. I didn’t think much of it at the time but, after further thought, I see how the enhancement of our wonderful buildings at first floor level might be just the impetus to enhance footfall in Halifax out of all proportion to the cost. It would certainly be worth a try for next year and add to the good work already being done by the Council in this respect.
