No need to build on green belt

According to the Courier today, some Green Belt land around Calderdale will be used for housing. Why??

There are three tower blocks adjacent to Halifax Police Station that have been empty for at least five years which should be refurbished and used again or demolished and decent housing built on the site instead There are hundreds of empty domestic properties around the Borough which should be brought back into use or landlords made to upgrade them so that they are fit to live in. There are hundreds of redundant mills and buildings which could be converted into homes and waste land brought back into use. The Council should look at all the other options open to them to provide additional housing before building on green field sites. It just isn’t necessary.
