As we once again approach Remembrance Sunday, I write to seek the support of your readers and indeed all the citizens of Calderdale for this year’s Poppy Appeal - a special year as it falls on the 11 November.
Last year, the Poppy Appeal again received wonderful support from the public. The Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal is again undertaking a ‘Poppy People’ campaign to attract new Poppy Appeal volunteers. Anyone over 16 years of age can help, you need only to ring 0800 085 5924. Our people have a high regard for members of the armed forces and what they have been called on to do for our citizens, Borough and communities recently and in the past and tragically this year nine servicemen from the 3rd Battalion The Yorkshire Regiment (Duke of Wellington’s) have made the ultimate sacrifice. As evidenced by the fact that we shall be signing a Calderdale Community Covenant scheme on Remembrance Sunday to ensure that we as a Council meet our obligations to our local armed forces community. We all owe a debt of gratitude to those who in wars and conflicts have helped to win the freedom we now enjoy. By making donations through the “Poppy Appeal” we can go some way towards repaying that debt. Please be generous and support The Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal.
Councillor John Hardy
