Labour Councillor Frank McManus (Your Say, March 29) bemoans the shortage of affordable housing in Calderdale and blames the Coalition government for the deficiency.

In doing so he ignores the reason for the shortage, namely the failure of the recent Labour government, despite sharing the benefits of international financial prosperity for over 10 years, to take action to remedy the developing housing crisis arising from an ageing and increasing population.
Urgent action to address the resulting problem is certainly necessary and I suggest the reintroduction of ‘prefab’ construction, which greatly helped to relieve a similar situation after World War 2, should be undertaken. (There are still a number of post-war prefabs in Calderdale which are in excellent condition and are always snapped up as soon as they fall vacant.)
