Speak out for the council workers

In reply to Andrew Tagg’s letter (Your say, 23 February) it’s quite obvious that Mr Tagg does not work for the local government. May I remind him that Council employees are not responsible for the mess this country is in and for the most part, at least in our department are loyal and hard working.

Why should we accept the cuts that have been proposed, just because derisory amounts have been offered and accepted by others? Let me quote a poem by Pastor Martin Niemoller

First they came for the Communists

And I did not speak out

Because I was not a Communist

Then they came for the Socialist

And I did not speak out

Because I was not a Socialist

Then they came for the trade unionists

And I did not speak out

Because I was not a trade unionist

Then they came for the Jews

And I did not speak out

Because I was not a Jew

Then they came for me

And there was no one left

To speak out for me

If Mr Tagg and indeed anyone else who lives or works in Calderdale value the work done by all Council departments, I urge them to get behind the workers and stand up for their services, or when the do need them “There will be no one there to speak for them”.
