Wading bird was a rare white stork

Stafford Heap, of Luddenden Foot, sent in the photograph of the wading bird, taken from the canal towpath in his home village. He thought it looked like a stork, so we asked readers if they knew the species

Have your say

The bird in your photo (Courier, Picture of the Day, Wednesday May 2), is a white stork.

It could be one of our very rare visitors lost en-route to it’s breeding grounds in the Mediterranean after leaving Africa.

They don’t breed in the UK however. But more than likely, it’s an escapee from a zoo or someone’s bird collection somewhere.

It could be a juvenile going by the darkness of the beak but it’s hard to tell from the photograph.

A very beautiful bird though, regardless of where it may have come from!
