Winning beagles at county show

Manor Heath Road, Halifax

YOU quite rightly covered the local animal awards at this year's splendid Great Yorkshire Show (Courier, July 10).

But maybe there should be a mention of our local beagles. Although their base is in Kirklees their area of operation covers Calderdale and before they were banned from hunting foxes they did a wonderful job helping our local sheep farmers and are still able to operate under the new rules.

I always visit the hounds, beagles and terriers at the show and was delighted, as a supporter, to see the award cards placed on the kennels of these wonderful dogs and to have a word with those responsible for the management of this excellent pack of beagles.

Colne Valley Beagles came first and third in two doghound classes.

May I also mention the display in the tourism section by Calderdale Council? It is important that our growing tourism industry is recognised and that we use such important events to attract more visitors to our area.

With the current economic situation more Yorkshire residents will be seeking local holidays and we have much to offer in Calderdale.
