Birkridge Exley Lane Halifax
I am the chair of a local link of a national charity, the Chernobyl Children's Life Line - Halifax/Bradford Link.
The charity is dedicated to offering respite care to children aged 10 to 13 from Belarus and the Ukraine.
I recently wrote to the Evening Courier and had an amazing response with regard to recruiting new families to host a Belarussian child for this coming summer.
We had such a response that we are now looking at bringing 14 children and 1 leader over for 3 weeks in the summer.
We are, however, three families short for hosting on the second half of their stay here in England.
Host families look after a Belarussian child during their stay here in England, thus enabling the young person's immune system to improve.
The health problems caused by the disaster include an increased risk of thyroid cancers and leukaemia.
The weeks spent away from a still contaminated country in which they live, gives their immune systems a huge boost and time to recover.
The whole experience has made my own family more thoughtful and considerate of others.
My children are so much more appreciative of the luxuries they have in their lives which these children do not.
We organise lots of trips and fun activities during their 3 week visit of which anybody hosting a child is invited to attend.
We offer lots of assistance before and during the visit and we have an interpreter on hand, so please don't be put off by the language barrier.
If you feel you could offer a loving home to a child from the 5th August to the 15th August and enjoy the activities during summer 2011, please call me for more information on 01422 372994.
