DAVID Essex is a survivor, maintaining a strong following despite changing times and trends.

He knows how to work an audience, many of his fans running to the front.

The Victoria stop-off was part of his latest tour to promote self-penned songs from his latest album and the autumn tour of new musical, All The Fun of the Fair, in which he is involved.

He believes in hard work with plenty of numbers in an hour and 15 minutes on stage.

This time round there was less banter and more emphasis on the songs.

He was backed by carefully-chosen musicians, led by drummer Dave Wallace.

For a lot of the time he remained in the centre of the stage, using an old-style stand microphone and cable.

Most of his hits were there, including his first chart success, Rock On, from 1973, and A Winter's Tale.

Members of the audience were invited to join in with Gonna Make You a Star and Hold Me Close.

That was a very brief review, most of it favourable, of a fantastic concert, if a little unenthusiastic. David Essex was brilliant as ever and the Victoria Theatre rocked. I don't agree with Gordon Sampson saying David mainly stayed at the centre of the stage. David constantly walked up and down the stage pleasing his fans at both sides. Once we were all at the stage dancing David shone and we did get quite a bit of banter from him. David does know how to work his audience and we know how to have a good time joining in to ALL his songs both old and new.
