The Victoria Theatre, Halifax
IT WAS almost too good to be true, like a Bank Holiday gift from heaven – The Modfather played Halifax.

I like to think being born when the Jam's Going Underground was number one gave me a good ear for a decent tune. So I had high expectations of Paul Weller's sell-out Victoria gig. And I was not disappointed.

Last night, the intimate venue felt like a communal living room for his Calderdale fans.

The consummate showman, he strutted around the stage showing that performing was truly his only business. There was little chit-chat in between.

It was a bit of slow start as he played tracks from his new album, 22 Dreams, to be released in June. "New songs, new band, so we're kind of still practising," he told us.

So it was a relief to hear tunes such as From The Floorboards Up and Porcelain Doll – songs we knew the words to. A highlight was Paul's new single, Have You Made Up Your Mind?

Following that was a four-man acoustic set, including On A Misty Morning and Brand New Start.

People got on their feet for Peacock Suit and Changing Man but, disappointingly, crowd-pleasers You Do Something To Me, Wild Wood or A Town Called Malice were missing from the set.

A sound collection of new material, but some more of the old would have thrilled the audience even more.

But when he sings live Paul Weller shows he knows the science of music.

Now, that's entertainment.

I thought the gig was excellent, I really, really enjoyed it. I like the new material and look forward to hearing more from the new album. I, like a few people, were also a little disappointed with the lack of the old hits - "That's entertainment" or "English Rose" would have been perfect but it's Weller and he can pretty much do what he wants!!!!

I hope the Modfather returns!!!

was really excited on the way to see paul weller but was really fed up and let down on the way home.it was like been sat in his living room listening to him playing some drivel! instead of the brillent music that 95 percent of the audiece has grown to love him for.marks 3 out of 10.surely it cant just be me that feels this way?

Also printed set list shown on a paul weller forum shows 'wild wood' and 'you do something to me' - must have changed his set (unless reviewer was at the loo when he sang them!). Also 'Eton Rifles' on setlist - was that played?

the concert was ok but as i was a jam fan and never got to see them thought this would be the next best thing, all too nicey nice and toe tapping with no real punch, ian brown rocked it better but then again he didnt do too much old stone roses stuff either.

To be frank - this concert was always going to disapoint a large percentage of the audience. Particularly when so many local people were there and clearly not familar with any of his later work and not familair with attending concerts of any sort.

I overhead a number of attendees bitterly complaining at the lack of Jam songs.- Those who are not familar with PW concerts would expect a greatest hits style show - when it fact it is only over the last 5 /6 years he has begun to perform the odd Jam track.

He has a new LP out and historically he has always given greater priority to new stuff on tours to promote a new record - it does make sense.

Those who want to hear the Jam - stay at home and dig out your old LP's.

The guy split the Jam up when he was 23 - he's nearly 50 now - it would be rather sad if all he did was try to cling on to his early twentys. That was then - This is now !

The actual value of Paul Weller to me is that he is constantly changing - not stuck in some time warp. That is what Modernism is about surely ??

well maybe if he played some of his older stuff that most of the audience bought and made weller ,then the concert might have been alot better instead of the drivel that he played off his new album,,the young support band on before him rocked the venue more than he did!
