Bowls: Arriva hang on for victory in battle of the leading lights

ARRIVA held on in the face of a determined fightback from Clayton to win the big game of the week in Halifax BC's indoor leagues.

Arriva (Les Holmes, Mark McGorick, Robert Holmes and Dale Holdsworth) and Clayton (Tony Riley, Mel Fielding, Graham Roberts, Paul Gill) went into the contest as the top two in the Wednesday Evening Fours.

The game got off to a remarkable start. At the first end Holmes, playing on his backhand side, bowled a wood that rolled up to the jack, but did not touch it. The lead player for Clayton, Riley, then used the forehand side to also finish next to the jack.

As the game progressed Arriva, bowling a short jack, went into a 16-0 lead.

At the eighth end Clayton began their fightback, Riley leading a long jack as his team scored 11 shots without reply.

At the last end the number two player for Arriva, McGorlick, was lying shot with Clayton having the next five scoring woods, as Graham Roberts and Paul Gill tried to play out Arriva's scoring wood. They narrowly failed and relieved Arriva ran out 16-12 winners.

The teams meet again tomorrow in the Thursday Evening Triples and Clayton, the autumn champions, will be hoping for revenge. Clayton include Paul Kaye alongside Riley and Gill.

The skip for K9s, Malcolm Edmondson, had an afternoon he would rather forget in his team's game against Rabbits (Derek Finch, Jack Jowett, Jack Orley, Con McGinley) in the Monday Afternoon Fours.

Everything he tried to do - run the jack or bowl into the head for another shot - resulted in giving the advantage to Rabbits. His teammates Ron Hall, Bernard Farrar and Barry Wright were holding shot on three occasions as Edmondson suffered terrible luck to give the advantage to a delighted Rabbits, as K9s lost 10-9.

Newcomers Luddites (David Stinton, Arnold Winter, Ray Wolsey, Peter Richardson) threatened the upset of the season as they led top team G2 + A2 (Barbara Gee, Arthur Robinson, Alan Fleming, David Gee) by 6-2.

Their skip Richardson bowled into the head at four ends to give his team an early advantage. However, on the seventh end Wolsey ran the jack when his team were lying two shots to concede six shots. G2 + A2 went 10-7 up but at the penultimate end, with Luddites holding one shot, Richardson knocked one of his team's woods up to score three shots.

At the last end, with the score 10-10, Barbara Gee then bowled her best two shots of the game to help her side to a 13-10 success.
