Bowls: Dodgers negotiate tricky test

Denholme Dodgers (Eileen Dovernor, Jeff Dovernor, Tim Coleman, Ray Fearnley) had an emphatic 23-2 win over fellow newcomers Fair of Face (Mary Crabtree, Jean Lees, Geffrey Harrison, Ann Gaskin).

After their narrow defeat in their opening game, Triers (Kathleen Hey, John Palmer, Eddie Hirst, Roy Greenwood) came up against No Hopers, who were happy to welcome back lead player Jessie Jack. Jack, Lynda Helliwell, Sue Gormley, Joyce Shaw were neck and neck with the Ripponden team but Triers won 10-9 - a reversal in their fortunates.

As & Bs (Jean Atkinson, Duncan Coates, Alan Cowburn, Bob Batchelor) made it two wins from two against the other new team JABS (Joan Hallowes, Sandra Hutchinson, Ann Oates, Barbara Crompton) by 14-7.

Hit and Miss (David Ryding, Ben Atkinson, Martin Atkinson, Ian Ryding), a combination of brothers, a father and a son, came out on top by 13-8 in a Monday Evening Fours game against Phoenix (Pat McDonell, Harold Maude, John Stewart, Derek Cawthra).

Julie's Jugglers (Sheila Holbrook, Coleen Agnew, Julie Bousfield, Christine Turner) maintained their improvement in spite of losing 15-7 to the experienced Avengers team of Arthur Robinson, Neil Blackburn, Doug Parker and Keith Hanson.

The big game in the Friday Afternoon Triples saw autumn champions G2 + 1 (Mary Moore, Barbara and David Gee) playing runners up DWRs (Arthur Robinson, Peter Drinkwater, Keith Hanson). As in the previous game in December, DWRs went into a 9-2 and 11-4 lead before Moore took the mat up the rink to bowl a short jack and the fightback by her team began. G2 + 1 scored 12 shots without reply to lead 16-12 and although DWRs eventually won the jack, time ran out and they lost 16-13.
