Aspin talks strikers

Alex Titchiner in action for Fleetwood

Alex Titchiner in action for Fleetwood

Neil Aspin says the introduction of two strikers will help his side score goals in both the short term and the long.

Last Thursday afternoon the club confirmed the arrival of Welsh frontman Alex Titchiner on a month long loan from Fleetwood Town.

Then on Friday morning they announced the arrival of young forward Alex Johnson from Clitheroe.

“I think we needed to bring in a couple of forwards,” said Aspin.

On Titchiner, who rattled in over 39 goals in 54 league and cup starts in Evo-Stik Division One North last season, Aspin said: “The problem is that if you bring someone in on loan from a club in a higher league he has probably not been paying a lot of games and you need to gradually introduce them.

“Alex Titchiner scored a lot of goals last year. He’s a sharp player who knows where the goal is and he will score goals, I’m confident of that.

Titchiner made his debut as a second half substitute at Brackley Town - but was unable to force a goal as the Shaymen drew a blank.

“I wanted to get him involved, but I didn’t think it was right to throw him straight into the starting line-up but he’s here for the month and we’ve got lots of games so he will be a good addition for us.

On Johnson, Aspin said: “I’m always mindful that we need to look at some younger players who are a couple of leagues down the pyramaid and Alex has done well for Clitheroe.

“I’ve said to him he will have to wait for his chance a little bit, but when Alex Titchiner goes back it will be the case that Alex has bedded himself in.

“He’s got a tremendous work rate and it’s not really a gamble for us, it’s an opportunity for him and I’m hopeful that he can take it.”

On Town’s recent shyness in front of goal, Aspin said: “It’s a concern because we’ve got strikers who’ve got good pedigrees, but you can’t turn it on and off. We might have a time when one striker isn’t scoring but we’ve been fortunate that another one has come in and got the goals. “

“The main thing is we’ve got competition, but if you look at the goalscoring records it shouldn’t be too long before we start scoring.

“We certainly never sit back and defend and we go to win games and I would have expected us to have converted a few more goals over the last few weeks.”
