The Shaymen failed to score for the third game in a row as they were held at high flying Brackley Town.

The hosts hit the bar early from a free kick and that proved the closest either side would come on a closely contested afternoon in Northamptonshire.

But Neil Aspin’s side struggled to create anything clear cut against stubborn and resolute Brackley side as the scores ended even, meaning Town go in to Tuesday night’s West Riding County Cup game at Liversedge having won just one game out of six in October.

Aspin made one change from the side beaten at home to Lincoln in midweek with Jason Jarrett, available again after suspension, replacing Phil Bolland as Town reverted back to 4-4-2.

The first chance came for the hosts in the third minute after Danny Lowe was adjudged to have fouled striker Marvin Robinson 20 yards out.

The resulting free-kick saw Owen Story rattle the top of Matt Glennon’s cross bar and bounce clear with the Shay stopper beaten.

Halifax had a free-kick of their own in an almost identical position at the other end five minutes later after Gareth Seddon was fouled, but Paul Marshall could only curl agonisingly wide.

The hosts looked threatening in attack, although Elliot Sandy got his lobbed effort all wrong after beating the offside trap, and Liam Hogan had to be strong to block Robinson’s turn and shot all inside the first fifteen minutes.

The next fifteen were much less eventful - Jon Worthington’s tame effort from 20 yards and Glenn Walker’s in swinging free kick which missed everyone in the box the only moments worth noting as the two sides cancelled each other out in midfield.

With the half nearing a close Shaymen started to get on top, and although they only had a weak Seddon half volley and two blocked Lee Gregory shots to show for their efforts they certainly ended the half stronger as the sides went in even.

Lee Gregory came close to breaking the deadlock within two minutes of the restart but his well struck shot was held by Billy Turley, and three minutes later Robinson tried too, but he headed over the top from six yards when unchallenged.

Marshall saw his free-kick palmed away by Turley and the keeper was also off his line quickly to close down Gregory after he beat the offside trap - the shot bouncing to Seddon whose cross sailed straight out of play.

Debutant Alex Titchiner came on for Seddon with just over half an hour to go and was immediately involved when his shot from a Marshall cross was blocked.

Marshall himself saw an effort blocked and then blazed one over before being replaced by Simon Hackney with 15 minutes to go - but the action was at the other end where both Lowe and Hogan made late blocks.

The referee then waved away the hosts appeals for a penalty after Hogan jostled with Steve Diggin in the box with just over ten minutes to go.

But with both sides unable to find a winner, the match ended all square.
