FC Halifax Town: Anything is still possible, says Bencherif

The Shaymen’s crucial 3-2 win over Boreham Wood on Tuesday has put them two points clear of the bottom four with two games in hand.

Town host 15th placed Aldershot tomorrow and then travel to bottom side Kidderminster on Tuesday.

Bencherif believes Connor Hughes’ last-gasp winner in midweek might be the difference between staying up and going down, but is expecting an unpredictable end to the campaign.

“It could keep us up but we can’t rely on that,” he said.

“We need to keep showing loads of character because we’re going to need it.

“We’ve got six games left and we’ll need to battle in all of them.

“We have two games in hand on some teams, two points clear - it’s a good position to be in.

“But it’s still too close for comfort.

“Everybody needs to hold onto their seats because every result is possible and every game is tough.

“You can’t write off anyone but we’ve got to focus just on ourselves.

“At this stage of the season we can’t look at any other results.

“We know that if we lose on Saturday, we’ll shoot ourselves in the foot but if we win, we give ourselves some breathing space.”

The Town defender admits the next two games are vital, but insists none of the club’s remaining matches will be easy.

“They are both huge games, but every game is huge from now on,” he said.

“With the way the results have gone lately in the division, you can’t tell who’s going to win.

“Everybody’s either fighting for promotion or relegation, and even the teams in the middle haven’t got any pressure on them so they’re enjoying their football.

“It’s really tough to call so we’ve just got to take as many points as we can in every game.

“Forest Green and Cheltenham are games that, like Grimsby, we want to pay them back for the return games.”

Bencherif was overjoyed at Hughes’ dramatic goal, which he feels is the most valuable in Town’s season so far.

“The feeling is indescribable but everybody in the stadium felt it,” he said.

“That’s what people play play and watch football for, for that emotion, and it’s the story of our season - don’t give up.

“A lot of people could have given up on us but the fans haven’t and neither have we.

“It was the image of our season, the fans couldn’t sit down for a minute!

“It was entertaining football but not great for people who haven’t got a strong heart.

“The first half was great but we didn’t play as well in the second half.

“Once again we showed character, all the way to the last minute, and it was something we really needed.

“I don’t think there’s been a more important goal all season.”
