FC Halifax Town: Dream come true for Town captain Wroe

The midfielder arguably produced one of his best performances of the season as Halifax beat Grimsby 1-0 before lifting the trophy at the national stadium.

“It was just brilliant,” he said. “They’re the moments you dream about. Amazing.

“We did what we came to do, which is great.

“Hopefully we’ve created a buzz around the town and it might attract a few more people to go to The Shay next season.

“We knew it was a shop window, not just for us as players, but for the club as well.

“Everybody played their part and did a great job.”

Wroe believed The Shaymen did enough to earn the victory.

“I think we deserved to win,” he said. “We started really well, set our stall out and didn’t let them dictate too much.

“We passed the ball really well and I thought we were good in the first-half.

“The message at half-time was just to keep it going. We were probably causing them more problems than they were causing us.

“Then the goal - I don’t know if he meant it to go there but he’s swung his right foot at it.

“It’s just complete euphoria. You dream about going in front, and it gave us something to hang on to.

“Naturally we’re going to sit back a bit but we limited them to few chances.

“Credit to the boys because they worked so hard against a good side.

“A few lads, me included, were struggling a bit towards the end with fatigue and cramp.

“It’s a big pitch and we’ve had a three week lay-off.

“It’s a totally different game at Wembley than what we’d normally play and that tested us to the limit.

“But we got through it.

“We had a few chances at the end and could have gone 2-0 up.

“They knocked a lot of balls into the box but we managed to see it out.”

Wroe is now out-of-contract at The Shay, and admitted the Wembley triumph would be the perfect end to his time at the club if he moves on.

“It’d be a great way to bow out,” he added.

“You want to win all the time so there’s still that disappointment of relegation.

“Staying up was our main objective and the Trophy was the icing on the cake.

“But we’ll take winning at Wembley any day.

“It’s right up there as far as career highlights go.

“I’ve been to Wembley twice now and I’ve been part of two winning sides.”
