The Town keeper played what is expected to be his final game for the club and kept his 13th clean sheet of the campaign in the final.

“I can’t think of a better way to cap off the season,” Johnson said. “I didn’t think this would ever happen.

“It’s the best possible send-off we could have given the fans for the season.

“It’s a real thank you to the fans for their support.

“You can see on everyone’s faces that have turned up how much it means to them.

“They never stopped singing all the way through the game.

“I think they enjoyed every second of it and we did as well.

“It was just pure elation at full-time.

“It’s just brilliant for everyone involved.

“The fans were unbelievable right the way through and we’re all so happy with the result.

“When Macca scored I was relieved mainly because I thought they were getting on top a bit and that we could do with a goal.

“It was such a great goal as well.”

Johnson praised the efforts of the defenders in front of him for their backs-to-the-wall effort in protecting Town’s lead late on.

He added: “I thought we played well throughout the game so Jim just wanted more of the same at half-time.

“We defended unbelievably well throughout the game. There were some great blocks everywhere and the lads at the back were brilliant.

“Thankfully they didn’t really have a shot for 20 minutes after our goal but I had a couple of saves towards the end.

“I think we just defended absolutely tremendously.”
