FC Halifax Town: Wembley win only just sinking in for Walker

Walker capped his first season at The Shay with a winner’s medal after coming off the bench in their 1-0 win over Grimsby on Sunday.

The former Curzon Ashton man struggled to sum up how it felt to win at Wembley.

“I think it’ll start to sink in now a few days have passed,” he said.

“When you’re out there you’re just tuning into the game, but when you look back on it, you take it all in.

“When you’re in the game you’re not really thinking too much that you’re playing in such a big match.

“It’s more ‘what’s my job?’, ‘can I do it right?’

“It’s just amazing. It’s one of those feelings that you can’t really put into words because you can’t do it justice.”

Walker revealed the post-match celebrations were fairly wild back in the changing room.

“Everybody was going beserk, led by the scouse lads of course!,” he said.

“We’re all over the moon. For a season that petered out and finished on a sour note, that picked everyone up.

“The fans were immense as well. Just sitting on the bench and listening to how loud they were.

“I’m so pleased we’ve done it for them.

“It doesn’t mean anything if you don’t win - you can’t take any good memories away from it if you get beaten.

“For Macca (Scott McManus) to get the goal - you can’t write it any better than that.”

The midfielder made his first Town appearance since the 4-1 defeat at Barrow in March, and only just managed to recover in time from a medial ligament injury to feature at Wembley.

“It was a race against time to get fit and you’re in the dark knowing if you’re going to be involved,” he said.

“I’d trained well over the last couple of weeks and worked really hard.

“I think that showed and Jim gave me the nod that I was going to be in the match-day squad the day before the game.

“I was more than happy to come on and contribute.

“They told me and Kingsley to go warm-up when Browny went down after about 15 minutes.

“I was on the edge of my seat to be honest thinking ‘it might be now’.

“With Josh it was quite out of the blue. I was already warming up and someone gave me the shout.”
