A strong Town side, including debutant Dan Gardner, were simply too much for Liversedge as they swept aside their West Yorkshire neighbours in the second round of the West Riding County Cup.
Gardner, making his first appearance in a Town shirt since leaving the field on a stretcher during a pre-season game against Stockport, opened the scoring on six minutes from the penalty spot after Gareth Seddon was brought down by ‘Sedge keeper Paul Hagreen.
The midfielder than lashed home an unstoppable drive from 20 yards before being withdrawn with 36 valuable and impressive minutes under his belt as he pushes towards full fitness.
Simon Hackney added a third with an angled finish and Seddon dinked home a fourth before the break as Town’s dominance was reflected in the scoreline.
Seddon, who captained the side, scored an acrobatic fifth for the Shaymen in the 52nd minute, and twenty minutes later Conor Qualter headed home Jason Jarrett’s corner for the sixth.
Scott McManus struck the post, new signing Alex Johnson had a goal ruled out for offside and Seddon fluffed a chance for a hat-trick when one on one before Dale Johnson’s steered header completed the rout a minute before the end as Town progressed to the next round with ease.
Trialist Sean Kelly, who recently returned from playing football in Australia, played just 24 minutes before being withdrawn with a knee injury.
Liversedge, who play in the Northern Counties East Football League, battled hard throughout but wasted their best chance when sub Dan Toronczak fired wide from close range.
