Neil Aspin said that his players were right to feel disappointed after they limped out of the FA Cup.
Town were poor for much of Tuesday night’s 2-0 defeat at home to Lincoln City - a stark contrast to Saturday’s draw at Sinicl Bank during which the Shaymen outplayed the Imps but could only force a draw.
Aspin admitted after the 2-0 defeat that he thought Town’s best chance had gone on Saturday, but said that the performance on Tuesday night was not good enough to earn a place in round one and a home tie against League One Walsall.
“It was totally different to Saturday’s game when we played really well and deserved to win it, but tonight we didn’t and we got what we deserved,” he said.
“It was a poor performance, didn’t put them under enough pressure and conceded two bad goals, and if you do that then you can’t have any complaints if you lose the game.”
“On Saturday we played at a better tempo, we moved the ball quicker and certainly passed it better.
“All over the park we were sharper to the ball and we had a good balance between attack and defence.
Aspin said he was disappointed with the way his side defended throughout the game.
“The first goal we conceded was poor because we had enough men in defensive areas to cope with the cross and we needed to stop the cross going in to start with. It was a poor goal to concede and that puts you on the back foot, and obviously they can sit back and use their lad up front who was a real outlet for them, and played to their strengths.
“Their results have been better away from home and you can see why but the first goal was a real killer blow.
“The second goal killed us off but the first goal was the main one. Even though they got the second you couldn’t see us scoring because we weren’t putting their goal under enough pressure, so I think the first goal was the key to what sort of performance we saw tonight.
“I’m not here to make excuses, it wasn’t good enough, we weren’t good enough and we have to be better.”
When asked about the mood in the dressing room, Aspin added: “If the players have got any pride then they won’t be happy. I would expect them to be disappointed and I’m disappointed too, but I would be even more disappointed if they came off thinking they’ve done alright because they haven’t.”
