Brighouse concede cup tie

Brighouse Town have conceded their Doodson Integro League Cup tie to Shaw Lane.

The Barnsley side were leading the preliminary round contest 2-0 after 60 minutes at Hove Edge recently when the visitors’ Daniel Wilkinson collapsed and died.

Had the match gone on a little longer before being abandoned, the result would have stood and Shaw Lane gone through.

Brighouse had no wish to make Shaw Lane return for a replay, while their opponents are keen to do well in the competition in Wilkinson’s memory.

Shaw Lane will be at home to Blyth Spartans in round one.

Town chairman Charles Tolley, former CEO Chris Lister, committee member Barrie Fitzjohn, manager Paul Quinn, co-assistant Lee Ashforth and players Dan Illingworth and Leon Osborne attended the centre back’s funeral at Chanterlands Crematorium, Hull on Monday.

Almost 500 packed the city’s crematorium and a wake at Hull City’s KC Stadium.

Town were thanked by Wilkinson’s family, the Shaw Lane club, Evo-Stik officials present and other clubs for their solid support since the tragic death on their ground two weeks last Monday.

A bucket collection at the Hyde Utd game last week raised £453 and chocolates made by Town coach Dave Thompson’s wife and daughter raised £150 for the Daniel Wilkinson Foundation set up by the Barnsley-based club.
