Neil Aspin says Town turned down a ‘laughable’ offer for Lee Gregory before the end of the transfer window.
Town kept hold of their star striker despite fevered speculation he would be prised away after he was linked with several Football League clubs.
But the Town boss revealed the club rejected an offer from an unnamed club and has called on his top-scorer to maintain his prolific season after he drew a blank at Lincoln on Saturday.
Aspin said: “We’re delighted to have him at the club.
“I had a lot of contact with him (last week) and it’s a difficult time for Lee because he’s been linked with clubs without those clubs coming through with a concrete offer.
“We did receive one offer which was way below our valuation. The offer we had for him was an insulting offer which was just laughable.
“But he knows that if we get a good offer and it’s good for him and good for the club then we won’t stand in his way.
“But at this moment in time it’s not materialised so he has to get his head down, keep scoring goals like he has done and if he does that, he’ll always have a chance of getting a club to come in for him.
“But any footballer moves because of what they do on the pitch and it’s the same for Lee.
“He’s got to keep his standards up because the one game where you don’t play particularly well is the game that somebody’s come to watch you play so he has to keep his level of performance high.
“His attitude is tremendous and I think he trusts me enough to know that I’ll keep him in the picture and I wouldn’t try to stitch him up.
“I said to him (on Friday) that if I was to sell him for the offer we got, it’s nothing to do with the club, it would make me look like an idiot and I’m not prepared for that to happen.
“It has to be fair to the club and if that happens then I’d be glad for one of our players who has done a good job for me over the years to move to a higher level of football where I feel his talent deserves.”
