FC Halifax Town capped their pre-season campaign in style with a dominant 4-0 win at Buxton.

Scott Boden scored twice in the first-half before substitutes Paul Marshall and Richard Peniket found the net after the interval.

Town started in a 3-5-2 with a line-up expected to be somewhere near the 11 that will take to the field at Dover next Saturday.

Town fielded a well balanced side with Simon Ainge, Marc Roberts and Steve Williams forming a strong defensive shield and Ross Dyer and Boden offering a burgeoning partnership in attack.

That was in evidence when Dyer flicked on a long ball by Matt Glennon although Boden prodded the ball straight at Aaron Jameson.

The Buxton keeper denied him again moments later from four yards after a delightful dinked pass by Danny Schofield.

From the resulting corner, a clear foul on Williams allowed Boden to send Jameson the wrong way from the penalty spot.

Buxton offered little in response as Town’s three centre-backs lapped up the hosts’ long balls through the middle.

The Boden-Jameson duel continued as the Town striker was denied for the third time by the former Sheffield Wednesday stopper after Ainge’s free-kick into the box.

Dyer’s aerial prowess and Boden’s pace in behind complemented each other nicely; while Lee Gregory was arguably more effective as a lone striker, those two look a potent pairing in the making.

Boden doubled his tally after a delightful move saw Schofield spread the play to McManus, whose cross laid it on a plate for the Town striker.

Buxton looked brighter after the restart, possibly helped by seven Town changes, although one of those, Adam Smith, was unlucky to hit the post after a storming run into the box.

Smith did more than any of the substitutes to push his claim not to be on the bench next Saturday with a typically lively cameo.

Marshall also impressed, especially with a superb free-kick from 25 yards, which was followed up barely a minute later when Peniket nodded in after James Bolton’s shot was blocked.

Buxton couldn’t even muster a late consolation as Glennon reacted brilliantly to save a penalty and the rebound before also saving Liam Hardy’s thunderous free-kick moments later.
