Favourites tag means nothing

The bookmakers make FC Halifax favourites to win the Blue Square Bet North - but it means nothing to Neil Aspin,

Bookmakers Coral have Town as 7/2 favourites to lift the trophy come the end of April, with newly-promoted Chester F,C, at 9/2, while league sponsors Blue Square have Town at 10/3 and Chester at 4/1.

The Cheshire club, who have bolstered their squad with the arrival of former Town midfielder Sean Clancy, were favourites for the crown until the Shaymen confirmed their raft of summer signings.

But manager Neil Aspin doesn’t believe being favourites will add any pressure to his side, who also began last season as the bookies tip.

“If I had any 11 players we would always get quoted as one of the challengers because this is a big club and it has played at a higher level,” he said,

“But that’s all in the past. It’s just about what we do now and whether or not we’re favourites are other people’s opinions.

He pointed at the example of last season’s runaway winners Hyde, who were tipped for relegation during the close season, for proof that the odds are not always a clear indicator.

“I don’t look at who are favourites. The example of Hyde last year is why we’re in sport - nobody knows what’s going to happen.

“I don’t necessarily consider us favourites because there will be teams with bigger squads than us with more options than us but I’m confident that the 11 players we put out will be competitive and that’s what I’ve always said.

“I’m under pressure with myself because I want to win games. I’m expected to win games as manager and I want to win games, but the only pressure I’m under is because I want to win and i want to do well.

“But it’s a big season for us and we’re looking forward to it,” he added.
