Ex-Halifax Town defender Sean McAuley has re-joined American side Portland Timbers almost ten years after helping to forge a link between the two clubs.

McAuley, 40, left the Timbers to sign for the Shaymen in 2003, with Jake Sagare signing shortly afterwards.

The transfers helped cement a link between the two clubs, with fans travelling across the pond to watch each of the sides.

McAuley, who trained as a youngster at Manchester United and played for Scunthorpe, Rochdale and Hartlepool, has left Sheffield Wednesday to take up the role of assistant manager with the Timbers, who play in the MLS.
