A minute’s silence was held in memory of Debbie Charlton before FC Halifax Town’s home game with Braintree.

The tribute was impeccably observed by the 1,268 crowd at the Shay before Town went on to beat Braintree 1-0.

Halifax chairman David Bosomworth said: “It’s been a sombre day behind the scenes and it becomes more poignant when this time last week Debbie was doing her job and this time this week she isn’t.

“It’s ever so sad but I thought (the minute’s silence) was beautifully observed.

“We’ve had lots of testimonials and so on, we couldn’t get them all in the programme.

“It’s gone as well as any such day can go and hopefully the result is a fitting tribute for Debbie.”

The Town chairman admitted it had been a difficult week at the club.

He added: “It’s been a very difficult week. We don’t want too many of those.

“I know because of her love of her job and of sport, the one thing she would have said is the show has to go on.

“We said that she would expect us to do that but it’s just terribly sad circumstances.”
