FC Halifax Town have missed out on a Wembley appearance, and a possible return to the Football League, after suffering a heartbreaking defeat in their Conference play off semi-final, second leg clash at Cambridge United this afternoon.

Leading 1-0 from the first leg at the Shay following Lee Gregory’s late penalty, hopes were high that Neil Aspin’s side could finish the job at the Abbey Stadium in front of 1.074 travelling fans in a crowd of 6,262.

However, two first half goals from Delano Sam-Yorke overturned Town’s slender advantage and as a result it will be Cambridge United who contest the showpiece final against either Gateshead or Grimsby Town at Wembley on Sunday, May 18 where a place in League 2 is the prize on offer to the winners.
