Halifax High Schools Year 8 football team overcame a first game defeat to lift the trophy at a five-a-side tournament in Bradford.
And, ironically, Halifax High beat the tean who had defeaqted them, Yorkshire champions Lawnswood School, in the final.
Halifax High recorded victories against Leeds West Academy and Tong High School. The squad worked well together andgave 100 percent for the school.
The boys remained unbeaten all the way to the final, with a convincing semi-final success against North Halifax Grammar providing the team with an abundance of confidence.
Lawnswood came out of the traps with a barrage of long distance shots either put wide of the post or blocked. Halifax looked comfortable in possession and a clinical finish by Haider Asghar made it 1-0. Halifax High then conceded a penalty which was smashed well wide. This was a wake-up call for Halifax High who went on to extend their lead with a swift passing move down the right by Omar Ahmed and Haider to make it 2-0 just before half time.
The second half proved just as engaging with Lawnswood’s possession leading to what was an inevitable goal to make it 2-1. Halifax High looked strong but it was clear that fatigue was setting in and Shahraz Hussain was forced into making several inspiring saves.
It looked as though it was going to be an anxious finish until Haider squared the ball across the box and Omar had the composure and peace of mind to slot it into the bottom left hand corner to make it 3-1.
