Brighouse Town’s dreams of reaching Wembley are over after they were knocked out of the FA Vase with a 2-1 defeat at Newport.

A first-half goal from Ernest Boafo after 23 minutes had the visitors dreaming of a possible Wembley final and prize money of £2,000 for reaching the last 16 of the competition.

But a second-half comeback by Newport saw those hopes dashed as Tom McInnes bagged two goals in three minutes to send the hosts through.

Brighouse manager Paul Quinn said he sympathised with his team and felt his side deserved to go through.

He said: “We’re very disappointed. We’ve dominated the game for 70-75 minutes but not been able to kill them off.

“They’ve had two chances in the second-half and tucked them away so credit to them for that.

“I feel sorry for the players though because they’ve played out of their skins.”

Quinnn also said the club had enjoyed the build-up to the tie and hoped the club’s run in the FA Vase had brought the club to more people’s attention.

He added: “A lot of preparation has gone into the game and I couldn’t have asked for more from the players.

“They’ve done the club and the town proud and put the club on the map a bit. The last two days have been a phenomenal experience but it just wasn’t meant to be.

“But we’ve got a lot to play for this season and I’m sure we’ll bounce back from this and push on in the league now.”
