Ovenden keen to push on

Ovenden West Riding reach the halfway point of their Premier Division campaign when they receive bottom club Overthorpe to Natty Lane tomorrow (2.30).

Since they were re-instated at the beginning of the season, Overthorpe have struggled to keep away from the lower reaches.

Nicki Croisdale, Scott Minto and Ashley Hill have always been in the thick of their survival bid and Ovenden cannot be complacent.

Last weekend Ovenden ran out 4-1 winners over Storthes Hall.

A superb back heel by Carlton Pownall put John Booth clear and he beat James Roberts from 15 yards and on the hour Pownall broke clear and his pace and cool finish made it 2-0.

The youngster missed a couple more chances before extending the lead with a repeat of his first goal.

Hall were looking dejected and Steve Fullard steered home number four.

The visitors did find the target when Alex Slack took advantage of a static looking Ovenden defence.

Halifax Irish travel to Wakefield City in the League Cup quarter final in arguably the tie of the round.

Wakefield beat Irish 1-0 in the league last month and with Irish failing to win in their last two games City go into the game as hot favourites.

Irish are hoping to recall Lee Coulthard who has been absent through work commitments.

Last week Halifax Irish let a two goal first half lead to an energetic and well organised AFC Emley.

Irish took the lead when Scott Eastwood’s free kick was headed back across goal for Gareth Sherwood to steer home.

Matthew Townsend pulled off an unbelievable save just before half time after which Sherwood played in Gareth Jones who took the ball in his stride before firing home.

Emley were back in the game when a loose ball broke to captain Jonathan Irving and they were on level terms not long after when Jack Portman coolly finished.

West Riding Reserves are back in action with Golcar United Reserves the visitors to Shroggs Park (2.30).

Matt Smith, Matt Mason and Martin Coldwell are the West Riding players who will need to lead by example if their side are to stay in the hunt for a promotion spot.
