Ovenden WR had officials of the West Riding County Amateur League hunting through the record books after winning 17-0 at Overthorpe SC on Saturday.

Danny Megson’ reigning champions and title contenders head the Premier Division on goal difference from Steeton, who themselves won 9-0 at home to Kirkburton.

Ovenden scored nine goals in the first half and eight in the second. Their marksmen were Steve Fullard (seven), Damian Randall (four), Carlton Pownall (two), Steve Senior (two), John Booth and Isaac Nicholl.

Long-serving league official Philip Rhodes was unable to come up with a bigger win.

He said: “Games involving goals into double figures are unusual in the league, though not unheard of.

“In season 1999-2000, Hemsworth Miners Welfare beat Tyersal 14-0, and in 2000-01, Ovenden West Riding had a 11-0 home win over Crag Road United.”
