Simon edges out colleague Danny to take the title in photo finish
Football is a funny old game.
Especially for work colleagues Simon Gill and Danny Maddock who beat more than 100 other teams to finish first and second in the Courier Reader's Fantasy Football League.
Friends Simon, 32, and Danny, 27, who both work at Emergent Crown on Pellon Lane, Halifax, scooped 300 between them after securing the top two places in the popular league, sponsored by Ziggy's Spice House.
Simon, whose team won by just two points on the last week of the season, said: "We're both pretty happy and it's been good banter all season.
"Being colleagues and good mates has added a bit of spice.
"Whoever's team has done worse would always get a phone call on Monday morning.
"At least now we can both afford to buy each other a celebration pint."
Simon's team Gillster XI finished the season on 2,100 points, with Danny's KX Pirates running him agonisingly close with 2,098.
The pair topped the field in what was an impressively-strong league.
Out of 140,781 private league's within the Premier League's main game, the Courier Readers' League was ranked at number 436.
And Simon's winning score of 2,100 placed him 2,401st out of a total field of just under 2 million players.
His first prize, combined with his October manager of the month win, means he is also our league's highest earner, his total winnings for the season standing at 230.
Snapping up the last of the prize money for the season is Patrick Walker, whose team Smoke Me A Kipper won him the manager of the month accolade for May - and the 30 that goes with it. He saw off the challenge of Lisa Turner by seven points to take the spoils.
The manager of the month prizes were evenly spread over the season with only Geoff Pryor, who finished third in the overall race, landing more than one monthly prize (September and February).
Two monthly prizes did however go to the same Halifax household when March manager of the month Vicky Cowley - the only female prize winner this season - followed up the win her fianc Daniel Jennings enjoyed in November.
