Halifax Golf Club captain John Broadbent has another reason to remember his year in office after yesterday’s Halifax-Huddersfield Alliance meeting at Bradley Hall.

The 14 handicapper teamed up with home club player Clive McFadzean (4) to win the am-am section with a stunning 47 stableford points.

The pair were in the last fourball home in the gathering gloom at 6pm after a bumper field of 68 pairs - the best this winter - had enjoyed pleasant sunshine once the early fog had lifted.

Broadbent, who ends his spell in office at Ogden later this month, and McFadzean were playing together for the first time, having met at a business meeting at the Shay last Thursday.

Broadbent had three nett eagles on par fours, the last of them coming on 17 after the pair thought they might have blown their chances on 16 when McFadzean drove out of bounds and Broadbent could only scramble a bogey.

McFadzean’s most eye-catching contribution came with successive birdies on 11, 12 and 13.

A Halifax GC winner was appropriate because the backer for the first sponsored Alliance event, landscape gardener Neville Pollard, is an Ogden member.

The latecomers’ score eclipsed that of Woodsome Hall tour pro Chris Hanson, who came in with 46 points for the second Alliance running.

Hanson and Bradley Hall’s Garry Shuttleworth (11) had won with that score at Crosland Heath and both played well again in the same fourball, but with different partners yesterday.

Hanson partnered Dewsbury’s John Smith (14) to win the pro-am section while Shuttleworth and clubmate Paul Hesselden (12), the incoming vice-captain at the Holywell Green club, were shunted back into third among the am-am combinations by the final pair.

The Bradley Hall pair had 43 points but an inferior back nine to Alliance assistant secretary Trevor Williams (14), who had been heading for a first win in five years with Crosland Heath clubmate Les Dyson (16) before the late change.

There are four Alliances meetings left this winter with the next one at Willow Valley on Tuesday, March 17.
