West End’s Frank Greaves and Todmorden’s Dave Stafford were in sparkling form to win yesaterday’s re-arranged Halifax-Huddersfield Winter Alliance meeting at Outlane.
The pair of one-handicappers scored 44 stableford points to win the am-am section by a two-point margin from host club pair Kevin Puckering (15) and Richard Wilson (19).
Stafford is a current member of the Halifax-Huddersfield Union side and Greaves has also appeared regularly for the representative team in the past.
They were clubmates at West End last year before Stafford returned to the Todmorden club, close to where he lives.
The event, the third of the Alliance winter season, had been washed out the previous Tuesday after little more than an hour’s play.
This week the course was swathed in mist with visibility varied but never good. The grass was very wet and preferred lies were in place.
The event was again well supported by professionals with nine pro-am pairs and 22 am-am combinations.
The pro-am prize was shared by Bradley Park’s Tom Wild and Mick Waddington (10) and Rob Stansfield and Gary Ward (9) on 42 points.
They were closely followed by the Woodsome Hall/Bradley Hall pairing of Chris Hanson and Gary Shuttleworth (11) on 41.
There was virtually no wind and scoring was generally very good. Two gross eagles were recorded - by Meltham’s Chris Holmes (7) on the par five seventh and by Mick Lord (10) of Bradley Hall on the shortish par four 15th.
The next event is at Dewbury District on Tuesday, October 30.
