Visitors upset leaders York

The Halifax-Huddersfield Union golf team's fortunes continued on an upward curve yesterday when they toppled Yorkshire Inter-District Union leaders York by 17-15 away.

York had won their opening three matches and were on track to extend their 100 per cent record when they led 7-5 after the morning foursomes at Sandburn Hall.

Andy Hare (Bradley Hall) and Tom Hunt (Meltham) were 2 & 1 victors and Tom Calvert (Huddersfield) and Ben Adamson (Crow Nest Park) added another two points for the visitors with a 3 & 2 success.

Halifax-Huddersfield’s other point in the morning came from a halved contest involving Fergus Barron (Dewsbury) and Josh Morton (Huddersfield).

Dewsbury’s Dan Hartley and Bradley Hall’s Sam Bridges notched 2 & 1 wins in the singles to give Halifax-Huddersfield hope.

Elliott Lister (Bradley Hall) had to settle for a share of the spoils after letting a four-hole lead slip but Hare won 3 & 2 and Huddersfield’s Jake Hamilton by 4 & 3.

Scott Minto (Hanging Heaton) halved his match, Hunt won 3 & 2 and success was sealed in style when Fergus Barron (Dewsbury eagled the par five 17th to win 2 & 1.

Dave Pullen’s side lost their first two matches of the season, against Bradford at Meltham and East Riding at Hornsea, but got off the mark with a 21-15 win over Harrogate at Dewsbury last month.

Their next match is against Teesside at Meltham on Sunday, August 7.

Castlefields Golf Club is hosting a Charity Golf Day in aid of Overgate Hospice on Saturday, July 23.

The Rastrick club, one of the smallest affiliated to the English Golf Union, has been running the event for more than 25 years, raising funds for different good causes.

This year’s charity day will include hole in one competitions on four holes with prizes including £5,000, a short break in Portugal, a two night UK golf break, and a set of golf clubs.

Tee times on the day are from 8-8.50am, 11.30am-12.20pm and 3.00-3.50pm.
