Willow Valley wonders
A MAGNIFICENT effort by Willow Valley saw them become the first ever team from the Halifax and Huddersfield Union to win through to the national finals of the Junior Team Golf Home Nations Inter-Club Championship.
The youngsters triumphed in the recent Union Junior League Final to earn the right to compete in the North Region Qualifier at Cookridge Hall, where two places at the national finals were up for grabs.
With one gross and four net scores from the six man team to count, the Willow Valley lads were ready for a tough battle as they teed off first in wet and windy conditions.
Six handicappers Lewis Howell and Tom Calvert were first out and looked set for one of the pair to post the best gross, and with Tom Brancker, who plays off 19, amazingly just four over at the turn and Ali Butters (12), George Branch (11) and Tom Pinder (20) all playing to their handicaps, things were looking good.
Calvert showed fine temperament and quality to eventually post an excellent gross 73, the second best gross of the day while Howell carded a creditable 82 and Brancker battled to a fine net 71.
Branch did well on the closing holes to register a net 77 while Pinder played superbly in the conditions to post a net 79 and Butters a creditable net 82.
That left Willow Valley with a total of 376 and after a long wait for the other teams to finish, it was confirmed that they had clinched second place behind winnners Oakdale and a spot in the national finals at The Oxfordshire Golf Club on Monday, October 27.
"I'm absolutely delighted for the team and supporters," said junior team organiser Chris Nuttall.
"This is arguably the finest achievement by a Willow Valley team as I'm certain that no other team have gone on to represent the club, union and region in a national final."
