New recruit Scott Murrell has been named as Halifax’s captain for 2013.

The former Leeds junior, who made his name in Super League during a seven-season stint at Hull KR, replaces Sean Penkywicz, who has joined Leigh.

Boss Karl Harrison admitted it had been a tough choice between Murrell and last season’s vice captain, the experienced half back Paul Handforth.

“It was a close call, but Scott got the nod,” said Harrison.

“He’s fitted in really well, he’s got everyone’s respect and he’s a real leader, on and off the field.

“He’s not someone who is going to make a lot of speeches, but he leads by his own example.

“I’m confident he’ll do a great job for us.”

Murrell, who impressed at loose forward against Keighley on Boxing Day but missed Sunday’s loss at Dewsbury with a hand injury, is expected to be fit for the Championship opener against Sheffield at the end of this month.
