Fax boss Marshall signs two year contract extension

Halifax have extended the contract of their coach Richard Marshall, tieing the 2015 Championship Coach of the Year to the club until the end of 2019.

Marshall, who took the club to a fourth-placed league finish and sixth in the Super 8s Qualifiers in his first season in sole charge of a side, had 12 months remaining on his current deal.

But the former Warrington assistant, who began his playing career with Fax as a teenager, has now penned a two year extension.

“It was an easy decision for me, to be honest,” said Marshall, whose side return to action in the Championship Shield against Sheffield at the Shay on Sunday (3.0).

“I’m ambitious, and I could possibly have looked down a different avenue, but I want to stay here and finish the job we’ve started since I came here.

“Obviously, the long term goal is to get the club back into Super League, but that is a long term goal.

“The short term and medium term goal is to continue to develop the team and to grow the interest in the club in the town.

“It’s a good club, well run by good people, and I want local players to aspire to play here rather than looking at Leeds or Huddersfield or Bradford because they have confidence in the culture we have built.

“The success we had last year and the accolades that came with it was great, but I’ve probably learnt more this year because of the knockbacks we have had.”

News of Marshall’s new deal was accompanied by a statement from football director Ian Croad, confirming the club’s playing budget was likely to remain relatively stable, despite the failure to clinch a top four berth this time around.

“As a club we are delighted to make this statement of intent by keeping Richard here for at least another three years,” said Croad.

“The club is building solid foundations for the future; the reserve grade structure is remaining in place where we hope to continue the development of young players at our club.

“Plans are well underway in terms of recruitment for next season where the budget for the first team will be similar to when we finished in the top four in 2015 – regardless of our sixth place finish this season.”
