Karl: Thacks in running for full back berth

Anthony Thackeray

Anthony Thackeray

Halifax will continue to experiment with playmaker Anthony Thackeray at full back after a promising cameo in the 42-16 Boxing Day win at Cougar Park.

Boss Karl Harrison first pondered fielding Thackeray, the former Hull, Castleford and Widnes half back, in the number one shirt last summer.

And the absence of regular starter Ryan Fieldhouse through illness gave Thackeray his chance; the Hull-based player setting up a try for Steve Tyrer as Fax ran in five late touchdowns to distance their Championship rivals.

“Thacks gave us a little bit of zip, but at the same time, Ryan is probably one of the best returners of the ball in the competition,” admitted Harrison.

“Thacks got shoved into touch once, gave the wrong ball a couple of times, but as a first experiment I thought he did okay and it’s certainly something we’ll be seeing again in the next couple of games.

“I also thought Rikki Sheriffe did very well there in the first half, so he has to be considered too.

“They are very different players and there’s an argument about whether it’s better to have someone who can create something for other people playing back there.

“It’s an ongoing discussion.”
