Kaye: Cup performance can spark Fax's season

Halifax hooker Ben Kaye believes a 'big performance' against Widnes in Sunday's Challenge Cup showdown at the Shay (3.0) could kick start the club's season.

Fax rose to fourth in the Championship with last weekend’s 36-32 win over Workington, putting them in a healthy position ahead of a potentially pivotal month which will see them face top four rivals Batley and Featherstone.

But Richard Marshall’s side have only rarely glimpsed the stellar form that characterised the second half of the 2015 season, something Kaye is quick to acknowledge.

“We are limping over the line, our performances haven’t been solid for most of the year,” said the former Leeds junior.

“We can’t put our finger on what it is, but it’s not lack of trying.

“If you look at where we are in the league, and how we’ve been playing, it shows that we have the ability, even though we’re not quite hitting it yet.

“We are lacking a bit of composure; it’s like we can’t react after errors or when things go wrong.

“We are where we are from grafting, rather than playing well.

“We are desperate to show the fans how good we are, but it’s not happened yet; I just hope they keep the faith.

“But a big performance against Widnes could turn the season.

“We’ve played them a few times and we know all about them; a big game here would really give us some confidence to take into the league.”
