Marshall left fuming after '˜unacceptable' Fax let points slip

Fax led the Lions, newly promoted and with just two wins to their name, 16-0 early on after early touchdowns from Jake Eccleston, Sam Smeaton and Miles Greenwood.

But on an afternoon when the home side produced possibly their worst defensive performance since Marshall arrived at the club 18 months ago, Swinton finally grabbed two precious points through a last minute try from Wigan loanee Liam Marshall.

“We bombed, again, a load of chances, we gifted them the ball, we capitulated,” fumed Marshall.

“We did that ourselves, through a lack of skill and not being good enough defensively, nowhere near good enough.

“They stacked that side of the field off the last scrum and we had to work harder as a team to get across there.

“We should never been in that position though; we were coasting at 16-0 and looking like we were going to score again.

“We took our foot off the gas at that point and that’s not what good teams do.

“Good teams are ruthless and relentless and keep going.

“To have lost that game, it’s unacceptable.

“We threw it away.”

Fax’s back three will come under particular scrutiny, with Greenwood making two crucial errors that led to tries and the recalled Will Sharp having a torrid time opposite four-try youngster Marshall.

“Positionally, the back three could have been better,” said Marshall.

“But we’ll review it, analyse it and see what was behind it.

“It’s two points dropped, but that’s sport, like Wakefield beating Wigan by 62 points.

“If you don’t show up with the right attitude, you get burned, you get done, and we got done.

“We’ll just have to go and find those two points from somewhere else now.”
