Nanyn’s hopes hit by hamstring

Centre Mick Nanyn’s hopes of making only his second Halifax appearance in more than a year against Championship rivals Batley this weekend look to have been wrecked by a hamstring injury.

Nanyn, who sits seventh on the game’s all-time points scoring charts after a prolific career with Rochdale, Swinton, Whitehaven, Widnes and Leigh, joined Fax in the autumn of 2011, but played just 40 minutes in pre season before sustaining a knee injury that required full reconstructive surgery.

Now, 12 gruelling months later, the giant threequarter is closing on a return to action, although a late setback could yet scupper those hopes.

“The specialist signed me off this week, and I was hoping to play in the Batley game,” confirmed Nanyn.

“But I pulled my hamstring before the pre-season game at Dewsbury, which has probably set me back a little bit, although I wouldn’t rule myself out just yet.

“I have been back in training for a couple of weeks and I’ve done a few full contact sessions and come through okay.

“It’s been a long time and the body is not getting any younger, but the knee feels great.

“I’m looking forward to playing a game now and getting on with the rest of the year.

“It’s been hard work and I was glad to see the back of 2012.

“I wanted to get back into contact work; I have done bits of wrestling and boxing in the gym, but there is nothing like getting on the pitch, having a run with the ball and making and taking the tackles.

“I am 30 now, and the body has got to get used to the training again and the rigours of going through that three or four times a week.”
