Honours even so far in final

LOW Moor and SBCI must return to Sowerby St Peter’s next Sunday to complete the Halifax League’s Parish Cup final after only 35 overs of play was possible today.

SBCI were 153 for five with 10 overs of their innings left when glorious sunshine gave way to heavy rain at 3.45 and play in the Briggs Priestley-sponsored contest was eventually abandoned for the day at 6.0.

That scoreline represented something of a fightback for underdogs Low Moor, whose skipper Nick Wood had elected to field against the Premier Division title contenders.

SBCI started with a flurry of boundaries from Sam Hinchliffe off tall opening bowler Craig Green.

Prolific run maker Jamie Summerscales was soon following his lead and the pair had taken the total to 65 in the 12th over when Hinchliffe scooped a Dave Matthews delivery to Charles Holdsworth at mid off.

The flow of runs remained unchecked, in spite of a watchful start from Tom Wood, with Summerscales reaching a 62-ball half-century with the first of two boundaries in two balls off Matthews in the 16th over.

However, SBCI talisman Summerscales perished for 59 with the total on 106 in the 21st over, chancing his arm just once too often.

Holdsworth, who had earlier almost caught him one-handed on the boundary, this time clung on to a sweetly-struck shot which flew to deep square leg off the bowling of Mark Stokes.

Summerscales’ departure marked a shift in the balance of power with youngsters Matthew Haley and spinner Brad Williamson hauling middle-section strugglers Moor firmly back into the contest.

What turned out to be the final 14 overs of the day produced another three wickets for the addition of 44 runs and 11 of those came from the final six balls before the weather broke.

Wood and Dan Keighley fell to Williamson - the latter to an excellent back-pedalling one-handed catch by Matthews - while Charles Hyland made a quick exit to give Haley a deserved success.

Left hander Craig Potts was taking the attack to Williamson when play was ended, leaving the match in the balance for next weekend’s resumption.
